What are Beechams Cold & Flu Blackcurrant Sachets?
These Beechams sachets are a form of treatment that works to relieve the effects of a cold or the flu. These sachets contain two active ingredients that help to treat the symptoms. These ingredients are:
- Paracetamol
- Phenylephrine
Paracetamol is a painkiller that can also help to reduce a fever. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that helps to reduce nasal congestion.
What causes a cold or the flu?
A cold and the flu are both viruses. They are caused by germs get into the body through the eyes, nose, or the mouth. The germs get into the air as a result of someone infected coughing or sneezing. These germs get attached to cells in the mouth or nose and then multiply and spread from there.
Who are these Beechams sachets suitable for?
These sachets are suitable for adults and children aged 16 and over. These sachets should not be used by anyone with any of the following:
- Kidney or liver problems
- Overactive thyroid
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart or circulation disease
- Glaucoma
- Taking antidepressants known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
If you are using any other medication, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using these sachets.
Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these sachets?
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should not use these sachets unless advised to do so by a doctor.
How should these Beechams Cold & Flu Blackcurrant Sachets be used?
Empty the contents of one sachet into a mug and add hot but not boiling water. Stir well until suitable to be used. Use one sachet every 4 hours but do not use more than 6 sachets in a 24-hour period. Do not use for more than 7 days without asking a doctor beforehand.
Are there any side effects?
Like with many medicines, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:
- Skin rashes
- Breathing problems
- Bruising or bleeding
- Fevers
- Nausea
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty passing water
If you notice a side effect, then speak to a doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
