What is Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam?
Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam is a medical treatment that is designed to treat the symptoms of a dry cough caused by a cold or bronchitis. This treatment contains two active ingredients that help to provide relief for dry cough:
- Dextromethorphan
- Menthol
Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that relieves the effect of a cough and menthol is a soothing agent that provides a cooling effect by blocking the calcium current in the nerves that is responsible for detecting the body’s temperature.
What causes a cold?
A cold is caused by the spread of germs, either in the air or on surfaces that have been touched regularly. A cold is characterised by several different symptoms besides a cough. These are:
- A headache
- A blocked, stuffy nose, or a runny nose
- Aches in the muscles
- Sneezing
- A Fever
A cold is one of the main causes of a cough, but there are others. Bronchitis, which is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes that carry air to and from the lungs, this leads to a thickened mucus that is often coughed up. Bronchitis can be an acute or chronic condition.
Who is this medicine suitable for?
This syrup is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients that it contains, or if you have or had any of these conditions:
- Taken Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression
- Shortage of breath
- Liver problems
- An asthma attack
- A persistent cough that produces phlegm

How should Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam be used?
Take 10ml (two 5ml spoonfuls) every four hours if required. If symptoms persist, then speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Are there any side effects?

- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Sickness
- Constipation
- Upset Stomach
