What is Otrivine Congestion Relief Nasal Spray?
Otrivine Congestion Relief Nasal Spray is a form of medication that will provide relief for the effects of nasal congestion from an allergy such as hay fever, or a cold. The active ingredient in this nasal spray is xylometazoline hydrochloride which works by opening up the nasal passages. This is done by reducing the swelling in the blood vessels caused by an allergy or cold.
How does nasal congestion occur?
Nasal congestion happens because of the blood vessels swelling up due to irritation or inflammation in the nose. This can be caused by a cold or the flu, as well as an allergy. Irritants such as tobacco smoke and car exhausts can also cause nasal congestion. Nasal congestion occurs as a result of the blood vessels in the nose swelling up which occurs because of the immune system which attacks them.
Who is this Otrivine Nasal Spray suitable for?
This nasal spray is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients that are contained in the nasal spray. It should also not be used by anyone who has recently had neurosurgery or has narrow-angle glaucoma. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using if any of the following apply to you:
- Have high blood pressure
- Have heart disease
- Have an overactive thyroid
- Are diabetic

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this nasal spray?
This Otrivine nasal spray is not suitable to be used by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. If you need treatment, then it is recommended that you consult a medical professional.
How should Otrivine Congestion Nasal Spray be used?
Before using, blow your nose. Prime the pump by pressing it 4 times. Once it has been primed, insert the nozzle into the nose and spray once into the nostril. Repeat this process with the other nostril. To reduce the risk of infection, this spray should only be used by one person. The recommended dosage for this spray is 1 spray into each nostril up to 3 times a day. Do not use for more than 28 days after opening.
Are there any potential side effects when using this nasal spray?
Like with any type of medication, there is the potential for side effects. Some of the potential side effects when using this nasal spray include:
- An allergic reaction which includes difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling in the face, or a red rash
- Dryness or irritation in the nose
- Nausea
- A headache
- A local burning sensation
