What is Benylin Children’s Night Coughs?

Benylin Children’s Night Coughs is a form of treatment that helps to relieve the effects of a cough and help your child have a good night sleep. It is also designed to relieve congestion in the nose that causes a runny nose and sneezing. The active ingredients in the medicine are:

  • Diphenhydramine
  • Levomenthol

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that works to relieve a cough and also clear dry secretions in the nose and chest. Levomenthol is a decongestant that helps to unblock the nose and make breathing easier.

 

What causes a cough?

A cough is caused by a virus infection, such as a cold or the flu. A cough is a response by the body to mucus or phlegm that has become caught in the chest or throat. A dry cough is a cough where no mucus is produced. This type of cough is because of an irritant in the throat, as well as a cold or flu.

 

Who is this cough medicine suitable for?

This medicine is suitable to be used by children aged between 6-12. For children older and younger, speak to a doctor or  pharmacist for advice on what treatment to use. This medicine should not be used if the user is allergic to the ingredients contained in the medicine. It should also not be used if a cough treatment is already being used. If the child has or had any of the following, then do not use:

  • Suffered from a prostate problem, in particular, passing urine
  • Suffers from closed-angle glaucoma
  • Taking treatment for depression called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

 

How should Benylin Children’s Night Coughs be used?

Use 10ml (two 5ml spoonfuls) every six hours. Do not give more than four doses a day. Also, do not use for more than five days consecutively without consent from a doctor.

 

Are there any side effects?

Because it is a medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • A skin rash
  • Itching
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • A headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Slurred speech
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure

If you notice any side effect, then stop using this medicine and speak to a doctor or  pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
