Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops are an effective decongestant. They are applied to provide relief from nasal congestion, perennial and allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis.
How Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops work
Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops contain the active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride. Xylometazoline hydrochloride helps to open up and clear the nasal passages by reducing the excessive nasal secretions and returning the swollen blood vessels to their normal size.
Directions
Always use Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / pharmacist has told you.
2-3 drops should be applied inside each nostril up to 3 times per day. Do not exceed 3 applications per day.
Do not take this product for more than 7 days in a row.
Side effects
Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
- Headaches
- Dryness of the nasal membranes
- Nasal discomfort
- Nausea
- Local irritation after applying the drops
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. You should not use the drops if:
- You have had recent neurosurgery
- You have narrow angle glaucoma
- You have chronic nasal inflammation with very dry nasal passages
- You have an enlarged prostate gland
- You have a rare tumour of the adrenal gland that produces high amounts of adrenaline and noradrenaline
Before using the drops you should talk to your doctor if:
- You have an overactive thyroid gland
- You have diabetes mellitus
- You have heart or circulatory disease
- You have hypertension
Using/taking other medicines
You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you are taking or have recently taken any medications. It is especially important if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors or other antidepressants.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any new product.
Storage information
Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
